Itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Lake Mburo National Park and Boat ride

You will set off after breakfast for the Lake Mburo National Park in the western part of the country. You will have a stopover at the Equator for photos at this international landmark where the two hemispheres divide. You will continue the drive through the rolling hills and plains dotted with community homesteads and herds of the long horned Ankole cattle to Lake Mburo National Park. The park is renowned for zebras, impalas, buffaloes, hippos, topi and elands including the rare shoebill stork, crested crane, pelicans, fish eagle, heron and many other water birds. You will arrive in time for an afternoon boat ride and later retire for dinner and overnight at the lodge of your booking.

Day 2: Walking safari and transfer to Bwindi

After an early breakfast, you will have a short drive to the Rwonyo park headquarters. This has often been a good chance of seeing hyenas coming back to the water you will see buffalo zebra, impala and topi and with a bit of luck may be even see asitatunga, an antelope rarely seen living in the papyrus swamps. Later you will transfer to Bwindi Forest National Park with a stopover at the Igongo Cultural village to visit the Ankole Museum. You will continue to Mbarara town and get lunch at Agip Motel. You will again get on the road after lunch for Bwindi arriving in the evening. Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge of booking.

Day 3: Bwindi Gorilla Trekking

We set off early in the morning for a 2-8 hour trek to encounter the Gorillas. Gorilla trekking is a demanding exercise as it involves going through steep and muddy conditions, sometimes with rain drizzles before encountering any close Gorilla group. Upon the encounter you will spend a maximum of one hour with the Gorillas taking photos and marveling at these elusive creatures. You will watch in awe as the gorillas go about their routine activities of feeding, grooming and playing. After trekking you will return to your lodge for lunch and rest. If the time permits you will go for a community walk to explore the life styles of the people living around the park and be amazed at their resourcefulness.

Day 4: Travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park

You will after breakfast drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park through the beautiful scenery of this part of the country characterized by gigantic hills and steep valleys of volcanic origin. You will get to Queen Elizabeth through the southern part of the park (Ishasha sector) renowned for the tree climbing lions. You will have a picnic lunch and drive all the way to the northern sector of the parkarriving in the evening.

Day 5: Game drive and boat cruise

We set off for an early morning game drive (6.30am) for an awesome experience of spotting the animals in their natural habitats. The collection will include elephants, solitary cape buffaloes, hyenas, lions, leopards, antelopes, warthogs and beautiful birds of prey such as vultures, ox-peckers, cattle egrets, whydahs, sparrows etc.This park has spectacular sceneries including Crater Lakes and rolling savannah plains overlooking the snowcapped Rwenzori Mountain ranges. You will return to your lodge for breakfast and relax till lunch. In the afternoon you will take a relaxing 2 hour boat cruise on Kazinga channel. This is a huge opportunity to spot more animals as they come to cool off down the stream. This trip passes through possibly the highest concentration of hippos. This launch cruise offers an excellent platform for photography, bird watching and game viewing. The prolific bird life is colorful and stupendous with well over 550 resident species.

Day 6: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park

You will after breakfast headto Kibale Forest National Park arriving in the early afternoon. On the Drive to Kibale National Park you will be able to enjoy an impressive sight of the legendary “Mountains of the Moon” which you will clearly see on the road to Fort Portal town. You will have lunch in Fort Portal after which you will head to the Kibale Forest National Park.

Day 7: Chimpanzee tracking and Bigodi swamp walk/Scenery viewing

After breakfast you will report at the Kanyanchu Tourist Centre at 08.00 am for a briefing before tracking the chimpanzees. The forest is only accessible on foot and the walk will provide you with the opportunity to also see a variety of other primates and animals as well as birds, and a variety of butterflies, and other insects. Here you will search for the wild chimpanzee, red-tailed monkey, black-and-white colobus monkey and many others. A guide will provide detailed explanationson the primates and the forest fauna and flora to ensure that your walk is informative. You will return to your lodge for lunch after which you will visit the unique Bigodi swamp eco-tourism site for a guided walk where you will see rare plants and bird species as well as beautiful butterfliesand other insects. The rare birds will include the Great Blue Turacco, little Bulbul, Rwenzori Turaco and the Narina Trogon, among others.You can alternatively have a tour of the crater region around Ndali lodge to appreciate the awesome scenic beauty of this part of the world.

Day 8: Kibale-Semuliki National Park for wildlife safaris and game viewing

You will have an early morning breakfast and head westwards to the Semuliki Wildlife Reserve located in the basin of the Western Rift Valley. You will have a stopover at the magnificent pressured waterfalls flying over the Nyakasura Mabere caves. Here you will learn about the historical and spiritual significance of the place to the local people. You will later drive to Semuliki National Park,a lowland dense forest with exotic primates, hundreds of bird species and mammals. Its location on the shores of Lake Albert provides excellent shoreline game viewing. Few tourists get into this incredibly beautiful area!

Day 9: Chimp tracking and bird watching in the Semliki Wildlife Reserve

You will have breakfast and head for the verdant rainforest to start Chimp tracking. Chimps are normally tracked in the early morning or in the evening because they have a tendency of hiding during the day. You will see several birds including the chestnut owlet, spotted-breasted ibis, Congo serpent eagle, black-throated coucal, chestnut-flanked goshawk, black-wattled hornbill, red-thighed sparrow hawk, red-rumped tinker bird, long-tailed hawk, Zenker’s honey guide, Nkulengu rail, Bates’s nightjar and Hartlaub’s duck. You will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 10: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park, Visit the top of the falls

We set off at 7a.m. after our morning breakfast and drive to Murchison. Upon arrival, you will visit the “top of the thunderous Murchison falls”, where you will observe the River Nile squeezing itself in a 7 meter gorge before tumbling 40 meters down in a thunderous explosion and then flows down into a very peaceful river whose water banks are swarmed with a profusion of water and land animals as well as birds. Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge of booking.

Day 11: Game drive and Boat cruise

You will wake up very early and set off at 6.30am for a sunrise game drive in the Nyamsika plateau to see the Cape buffaloes, Rothschild’s giraffes, Uganda kob, hartebeest and waterbucks. You may also spot oribi, bushbuck, Bohor reedbuck, shy sitatunga, bush duiker, warthog and bush pig plus large carnivores including lions, leopards and spotted hyenas. Chimpanzees and olive baboons head the list of six species of primates found in the park. Crocodiles and hippos will be seen along the banks of the Nile. Some of the more common birds that can be seen include goliath heron, Egyptian geese, pelican, bee-eaters, kingfishers, hornbill, cormorant, saddle-bill stork and the rare shoebill stork. You will return to your lodge for a late breakfast and some relaxation before you set off in the afternoon for a boat cruise on the placid Victoria Nile, upstream, to the base of the falls. En route you will see hippos, crocodiles, water buck and a wide variety of birds like the unusual shoebill stork. The boat stops just tens of meters from the “Devil’s Cauldron” for pictures to be taken of the photogenic and majestic Murchison Falls.

Day 12: Visit Ziwa Rhino and transfer Kampala/ Entebbe

You will after breakfast, Leave Murchison Falls National Park for Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. You will visit and track white rhinos at Ziwa rhino sanctuary. This sanctuary has now been established to breed black and white rhinos, and restore rhino populations in Uganda’s’ protected areas in a later stage. After, you will proceed to Kampala to catch up with your flight.

When to go gorilla tracking - gorilla trekking in Uganda & RwandaBEST TIME TO GO

Gorilla Viewing: Gorilla trekking can take place at any time of year with April/May and November being wetter. However, be aware that rain occurs all year round. For general game viewing safaris, the best time to go is during the dry season (between June and September).
