The 12 Day Uganda Rwanda Wildlife Safari starts and ends in Kigali – Rwanda taking you on an adventurous route through Nyungwe Forest‘s Primates, Volcanoes National Park‘s mountain gorillas, lake Mutanda and Bunyonyi’s birds and scenic views and the savannah wildlife game action in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival-Kigali

You will be met at Kanombe Airport by our Driver/guide who will transfer you to the hotel of your booking in Kigali. Depending on the time of arrival you will be taken around for an excursion in the city centre. You will be returned to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

You will have an early breakfast and travel to Butare, the second largest city of Rwanda. Butare is regarded as the intellectual city of Rwanda. It hosts the National Museum and several academic and research institutions. On your way to Butare you will visit the former King’s palace at Nyanza which was the seat of the feudal monarchy. You will visit the National Museum rated as one of the well set-up if not the finest ethnographic museum of East Africa and renowned for its source of information on the cultural history of Rwanda and the region. You will continue the journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park and check in at the lodge of your booking for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest

You will wake up very early in the morning (5.30am) and report at the Nyungwe Park headquarters for the 6.00am briefing on the chimpanzee tracking rules. You will after the briefing start the trek in search of the chimpanzees in the verdant rain forest. During the trek you will have the chance to see other primates such as the Rwenzori colobus, Silver monkey, the Grey cheeked Mangabey, L’hoests monkey and the Owl faced monkey. You will return to your Hotel for a late lunch and have the rest of the day to yourself to relax.

Day 4: Guided Nature Walk in Nyungwe Forest

You will have an early breakfast and set off for a guided nature walk in the forest to see a variety of animals and various species of birds. This forest is home to about three hundred bird species including the rare Rwenzori turaco and the black and white casqued hornbill. A walk in the forest is a whole learning experience about the botany, ornithology and ecology of the forest. You will return to your lodge for lunch after which you will transfer to Volcanoes National Park. You will have your dinner and overnight at the lodge of your booking.

Day 5: Gorilla trekking

You will have an early breakfast and transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla tracking rules. You will be allocated a Gorilla family to track and guides to lead you to the Gorillas. The tracking experience will be a 2-5 hour exercise after which you will be returned to the lodge for lunch. You will, later in the afternoon, be taken on a nature walk after which you will retire to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Golden Monkey tracking and transfer to Uganda

You will set off after breakfast to track the rare Golden monkeys in Parc Nationale Des Volcanoes. This activity will take you the whole morning and you will also be able to see other primate species such as vervet monkeys, baboons, and a variety of bird species and butterflies. The guide will explain to you how the primates behave and about the fauna and flora in this park. You will return to your hotel for lunch and drive to Uganda.

Day 7: Visit to Lake Mutanda and transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

You will have breakfast and drive to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for a guided nature walk in the Gahinga volcanic mountains to find the beautiful Lake Mutanda. You will enjoy the breathtaking scenery of this area and interact with the local communities to learn about their interesting lifestyles. You will return to your lodge for lunch and drive to Lake Bunyonyi arriving in the early evening. You will have dinner and overnight at the lodge of your booking.

Day 8: Exploration of Lake Bunyonyi and transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Lake Bunyonyi is said to be one of the most beautiful places in western Uganda. It is the second deepest lake in Africa [900 meters deep] and also one of the few places in the country where it is considered safe to swim as it is bilharzias free. The landscape around the lake is made up of terraced hills protruding from the water’s edge. Bunyonyi means “place of little birds” and as the name suggests, there is plenty of birdlife around the lake.You will have a canoe ride on this river and explore 4-7 of the 24 small islands on this lake teaming with many water animals and various bird species.

There is also the option of going for a 2-3 hour walk along Lake Bunyonyi [14 Kms] to enjoy different viewpoints of this beautiful place. You will go through the villages of the local people to have an experience of how they go about their routine activities and be amazed by the way they skillfully cultivate the hill sides and how they care for their animals (cows) that are a prime source of pride. You will also hike to the most popular view point on the hills to see the exceedingly beautiful scenery of this part of the country. You will return to your lodge for lunch and set off for Queen Elizabeth National Park arriving in the evening for dinner and overnight at the hotel of your booking.

Day 9: Game drive and boat launch

You will set off early (about 6.30am) for a morning game drive, an awesome experience to spot the animals in their natural habitats. Expect to see the famous Big Five; Elephant, Buffalos, Lions, Bush bucks, Kobs, Giant forest hog, Hyenas, leopards, antelopes, and Waterbucks as well as birds. You will return to the lodge for breakfast and relax till lunch. In the afternoon you will take a launch cruise along the amazing Kazinga channel to see at close range the water animals like hippos, buffalos, and crocodiles. There is also a variety of bird species on the water banks to include rare species like the famous Shoebill, pelican and Jacana. You will later return to your lodge for dinner and overnight as above.

Day 10: Travel back to Rwanda

You will have an early breakfast and set off for Rwanda through the Katuna border. During the drive you will enjoy the memorable scenic views of the Kigezi highlands, the Virunga Volcanoes and rolling hills of Rwanda. You will get to Kigali in the evening and check in at the hotel of your booking for dinner and overnight.

Day 11: Kigali City Excursion Tour-Departure

You will have lunch and go for an excursion in the City of Kigali. You will visit the Genocide memorial site to learn about how the genocide tragedy was perpetrated. You will also visit the craft centre to buy your souvenirs. You will return to your hotel for lunch and later set out again to visit the Camp Kigali Belgian Monument where the 10 Belgian UN Blue Beret soldiers were massacred. You will also visit the former state house of the late President Habyarimana which is now a museum.

Day 12: Departure

You will have breakfast and transfer to the Airport for your outbound departure flight.

When to go gorilla tracking - gorilla trekking in Uganda & RwandaBEST TIME TO GO

Gorilla Viewing: Gorilla trekking can take place at any time of year with April/May and November being wetter. However, be aware that rain occurs all year round. For general game viewing safaris, the best time to go is during the dry season (between June and September).
