Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Kibale, Bigodi Swamp Walk

You will depart from Kampala after breakfast and head westwards to Fort Portal town. The drive will take about 4 -5 hours. You will have lunch in Fort Portal and continue to Kibale.

In the afternoon we visit a nearby forest swamp that is excellent for viewing primates and other forest animals. At the Eastern edge of Kibale forest is Bigodi Wetland sanctuary which is maintained by the local community. You will expect birds like the great Blue turaco, blue monkeys, baboons, otters, mongoose, bush bucks, bush pigs and among others. Dinner and overnight will be at your reserved lodge.

Day 2: Chimp tracking and transfer to Semuliki

After breakfast, you will report to at the Kanyanchu Tourist Centre at 08.00 am for a briefing before tracking the chimpanzees. The forest is only accessible on foot and the walk will provide you with the opportunity to see a variety of other primates and animals as well as birds, and a variety of butterflies and other insects.

You will return to the lodge for lunch and in the afternoon you will transfer to Semuliki National Park. You will have dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Day 3:Wildlife Safari and Game viewing in Semuliki

You will have an early morning breakfast and head westwards to the Semliki Wildlife Reserve located in the basin of the Western Rift Valley with a stopover at the magnificent pressured waterfalls flying over the Nyakasura Mabere caves. Here you will learn about the historical and spiritual significance of the place to the local people.

You will later drive to Semuliki National Park, a lowland dense forest with exotic primates, hundreds of bird species and mammals. Its location on the shores of Lake Albert provides excellent shoreline game viewing. Few tourists get into this incredibly beautiful area!

Accommodation and meals will be at the Semuliki Safari Lodge.

Day 4: Chimp tracking and bird watching in the Semliki Wildlife Reserve

You will have breakfast and head for the verdant rainforest to start Chimp tracking. Chimps are normally tracked in the early morning or in the evening because they have a tendency of hiding during the day.

You will see several birds including the chestnut owlet, spotted-breasted ibis, Congo serpent eagle, black-throated coucal, chestnut-flanked goshawk, black-wattled hornbill, red-thighed sparrow hawk, red-rumped tinker bird, long-tailed hawk, Zenker’s honey guide, Nkulengu rail, Bates’s nightjar and Hartlaub’s duck. You will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

We depart in the morning after breakfast for Queen Elizabeth National Park. The drive is through a beautiful countryside dotted with traditional homesteads, crop gardens and plantations as well as trading centres and towns. You will have lunch enroute and arrive in the late afternoon. You will have dinner and overnight at the lodge of your booking.

Day 6: Game drive and Boat launch in Queen Elizabeth National Park

You will rise very early (06.30am) and with your packed lunch take on a morning game drive along Kasenyi and Queens Mile route to catch-up with the early risers and predators returning to their hideouts.

You will most likely meet grazing Hippos, Elephants, and Lions, spotted Hyenas, bush buck, water buck, stripped jackal, comical warthogs and the elusive leopard. You will return to your lodge for lunch and in the afternoon go for a 2-hour boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel.

This boat trip passes through possibly the highest concentration of hippos and offers an excellent platform for photography, bird watching and game viewing. Day 7: Guide walk in Kyambura, game drive in Ishasha sector and transfer to Bwindi

You will have an early breakfast and drive to Kyambura Gorge for a guided primate walk to see the habituated chimps, rare birds and beautiful scenery. You will after the walk proceed to Ishasha sector in the southern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park through the deep and wide dry craters that are occupied by savanna grasses andacacia. This sector of the park is renowned for the tree climbing lions and if you are lucky you will see them resting in the tree branches. You will have lunch at the Ishasha wilderness camp after which you will proceed to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.The journey to Bwindi takes about 4 hours and the route is well endowed with beautiful scenery.

Day 8: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

We set off early in the morning for a 2-8 hour trek to encounter the Gorillas. Gorilla trekking is an enjoyable experience though demanding as we go through steep and muddy conditions, sometimes with rain drizzles before encountering any Gorilla group closely. The thrill of your encounter will erase the difficulties of the potentially strenuous trek.

Upon the encounter you will spend a maximum of one hour with the Gorillas, taking photos and marveling at these elusive creatures. You will watch in awe as the gorillas go about their routine activities of feeding, grooming and resting as the youngsters frolic and swing from vines in a delightfully playful display.

After trekking you will return to your lodge for lunch and some rest and if the time permits you will go for a community walk to explore the life styles of the people living around the park.

Day 9: Transfer to Lake Mburo, Evening game drive

You will after breakfast, transfer to Lake Mburo National Park. This attractive park of rolling hills and open grassy valleys interspersed with thickets, woodlands and rich wetlands is the only park in Uganda where you can experience a safari on foot and also enjoy a night game drive to see the elusive leopard and other nocturnal animals.

Lake Mburo National Park is also renowned for zebras, impalas, buffaloes, hippos, topi and elands including the rare shoebill, crested crane, pelicans, fish eagle, heron and many water birds. Later, after lunch you will go for an evening game drive where you will expect to see zebra, hippos, crocodiles, eland, antelope, impala, and a variety of birds.And later retire to the lodge of your booking for dinner and overnight.

Day 10: Game drive and Boat cruise

You will set off early for a game drive in the park. You will spot big herds of Zebra, Impala, Eland, Warthogs, buffalo and other savannah species. For birders, this is one of the best places to find African Fin foot, Papyrus, Bush Shrike, etc. After lunch, you will go for an afternoon boat ride on Lake Mburo, rich with a variety of water animals such as hippos, crocodiles, and bird species.  Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge of booking.

Day 11: Walking safari and transfer to Kampala/ Entebbe

Early breakfast before embarking on our return to Kampala, You will have a short drive to the Rwonyo park headquarters. This has often been a good chance of seeing hyenas coming back to the water you will see buffalo zebra, impala and topi and with a bit of luck may be even asitatunga, an antelope rarely seen living in the papyrus swamps. Later, in the mid-morning you will transfer back in Kampala reaching in the evening. Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge of booking.

Day 12: Kampala City tour / shopping tour and departures

You will have an early breakfast and go for a city tour or shopping tour. You will have an opportunity to visit the craft markets, Uganda museum (It displays and exhibits ethnological, natural-historical and traditional life collections of Uganda’s cultural heritage), Bahai temple. You will also have an opportunity to go downtown to shop for some souvenirs to take back home. After lunch you will be transferred to Entebbe for your departure flight back home and that will mark the end of the 12 Day Uganda Primates & Wildlife Safari.

When to go gorilla tracking - gorilla trekking in Uganda & RwandaBEST TIME TO GO

Gorilla Viewing: Gorilla trekking can take place at any time of year with April/May and November being wetter. However, be aware that rain occurs all year round. For general game viewing safaris, the best time to go is during the dry season (between June and September).
