Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and City excursion

You will start your 13 day incredible Rwanda tour at this point where you’ll be received at the airport by our safari guide who will transfer you to the Hotel of your booking in Kigali. Depending on the time of arrival you will either stay at the hotel resting or be taken for an excursion in the city of Kigali.

The 13 day incredible Rwanda tour first day Kigali city excursion highlights will include the Kisozi Genocide memorial, Kigali Historical Museum, Caparaki art craft gallery and Belgium memorial.

You will be returned to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Travel to Nyungwe Forest National Park via Butare historical sites

You will have breakfast and the second day of the 13 day incredible Rwanda tour will commence with a drive to Butare town to visit the Nyanza Kings Palace and Butare National Museum. You will have a lunch break and return to the Rwanda National Museum for a cultural performance by traditional dancers. You will proceed to Nyungwe National Park and check in at the hotel of your booking for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest

You will wake up very early in the morning (5.30am) and report at the Nyungwe Park headquarters for the 6.00am briefing on the chimpanzee tracking rules. You will after the briefing start the trek in search of the chimpanzees in the verdant rain forest. During the chimp trek you will have the chance to see other primates such as the Rwenzori colobus, Silver monkey, the Grey cheeked Mangabey, L’hoests monkey and the Owl faced monkey.

You will return to your Hotel for a late lunch and later visit a tea factory to see how the finest tea in Africa is made. Dinner and overnight will be as above.

Day 4: Guided nature walk in Nyungwe Forest

You will have breakfast and go for a guided nature walk in the forest to see a variety of animals and various species of birds. This forest habours about three hundred bird species including the rare Rwenzori turaco and the black and white casqued hornbill. You will return to you hotel for lunch and have the rest of the day to yourself resting.

Day 5: Colobus hiking in Nyungwe Forest

You will have breakfast and set off with your guide to search for the Colobus monkeys in Nyungwe Forest. The forest is said to be home to the biggest troops of Angola Colobuses in the world numbering over 400 troops. The hike to where these primates stay is a thrilling experience as the guides explain the behaviour, activities and intelligence gimmicks of the primates. A walk in the forest is a whole learning experience about the botany, ornithology and ecology of the forest.

Day 6: Travel to Kibuye and boat cruise on Lake Kivu

You will have an early morning breakfast and drive to Kibuye holiday resort town. Enroute you will enjoy the beautiful topographical scenery characterized by undulating hills, deep valleys, and the typical Rwanda countryside. You will check in at the Hotel of your booking and have lunch. You will later relax at the beach or enjoy a boat ride on Lake Kivu.

Day 7: Lake Kivu Excursion and tour of Kibuye town

You will start the seventh day of the 13 day incredible Rwanda tour with taking a motor boat to Amahoro Island where you will have your breakfast and later visit other islands including the Napoleon Island best known for harboring thousands of Giant Bats (vleermuizen). You will return to Amahoro Island for lunch after which you will go for an excursion in Kibuye Town to visit the Genocide Church Memorial site and local market. You will return to your Hotel for dinner and overnight as above.

Day 8: Gisenyi Town Excursion and Lake Kivu

You will have breakfast and drive to Gisenyi Town. The scenery enroute is gorgeous, passing through green carpets of Tea plantations, undulating hills and beautiful topographical features. You will check in at the Hotel of your booking, have lunch and later sample the leisure activities on the lake and beaches. You will also have an optional tour of Gisenyi Town where you will visit the local market, the Kiaka Artisans workshops and the DR Congo border post.

Day 9: Golden Monkey trek in Volcanoes National Park

You will have an early morning breakfast and drive to Volcanoes National Park for Golden monkey trekking for the whole morning. You will have lunch at the hotel of your booking and later go for an excursion trip to visit the pretty twin lakes of Burera & Ruhondo. You will return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 10: Gorilla Trekking

This is the main highlight of the 13 day incredible Rwanda tour. It starts with an early breakfast and report at the Park Headquarters for a briefing on the rules to be observed during Gorilla trekking.

You will be allocated a Gorilla family to track and guides to lead you to the Gorillas. The Gorilla trekking activity will take 2-5 hours. Once the mountain gorillas are found, you will spend a maximum of one hour observing the gorillas in their natural setting. After the gorilla tracking you will return to your hotel for lunch.

You will later visit the Ibyiwacu community village to interact and be entertained by local people before returning to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 11: Second Gorilla Trekking (Option)

This gorilla trekking activity is the second of the 13 day incredible Rwanda tour. It is optional though, which means, you can stay back and recoup or take it. You will, after breakfast, report to the park headquarters to be allocated a guide and Gorilla family to track for your second encounter. After tracking you will return to your hotel for lunch and relaxation the rest of the day.

Day 12: Hiking Mt Bisoke

You will have an early breakfast (6.30am) and drive with your guide to Parc Nationale des Volcanoes from where you will start hiking Mt Bisoke. Hiking this mountain takes 1-2 hours depending on your physical fitness. Besides enjoying the beautiful scenery, the cool breeze and marveling at the beautiful Crater Lake the guide will explain to you the cultural significance of this Mountain to the local people. Climbing down the Mountain takes 1-1½ hours. You will return to the Hotel for lunch and later drive to Kigali.

Day 13: Departure

Depending on the flight schedule, you will do a brief shopping in the curio markets and souvenir shops where you will shop different Rwanda products for your remembrance before transferring to Kigali Airport for your home-bound flight and thus ending our 13 day incredible Rwanda tour.

When to go gorilla tracking - gorilla trekking in Uganda & RwandaBEST TIME TO GO

Gorilla Viewing: Gorilla trekking can take place at any time of year with April/May and November being wetter. However, be aware that rain occurs all year round. For general game viewing safaris, the best time to go is during the dry season (between June and September).
