Itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Murchison Falls National Park

We drive north-west through the famous Luwero Triangle and, travel to Masindi via Ziwa Rhino sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to Uganda’s Rhino reintroduction project. You will have the opportunity to trek the Rhinos after which you will continue to Masindi Town for lunch and later drive to Murchison Falls National Park to visit the top of the falls where the mighty Nile river compresses from its 1 kilometer wide dimension to squeeze into a 7 meter canyon and drops 45 meters below with a thunderous roar. The dropping of the water creates a beautiful rainbow and a plume of spray that is the highlight of this mighty river. You will then proceed to check in at the lodge of your booking for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Game drive in the park and boat launch on the Victoria Nile

You will wake up very early and with a packed breakfast set off at 6.30am to cross by ferry to the Northern bank of the Nile River for a dawn game drive. With the help of a guide you will spot Elephants, Lions, Cape buffaloes, Rothschild’s giraffes, hartebeest, Waterbuck, Oribi, Bushbuck, Bohor reedbuck, hyenas and if you are lucky, the leopard. You will return to your lodge for lunch and some rest after which you will go for a boat launch upstream the calm Victoria Nile to the base of the falls stopping just tens of meters from the “Devil’s Cauldron” popular for taking pictures of the majestic Murchison falls. En-route, you will see hippos, crocodiles, elephants, waterbucks and Uganda Kob. This area is also home to many bird species like the Goliath heron, Egyptian goose, Pelican bee-eater, Kingfisher, Hornbill, Cormorant and the rare Shoebill stork. You will after the boat launch return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Travel to Kibale National Park

You will have breakfast and then drive to Kibale Forest National Park via Fort Portal town. This town rests in the shadows the Rwenzori Mountain, the fabled “Mountains of the Moon”. Along this route you will pass through lush countryside dotted with traditional homesteads and farms along the Albertine Rift escarpments. We shall have Lunch in Hoima town after which we shall depart for the Kibale National Park, arriving at the lodge of your booking in the evening.

Day 4: Chimp tracking and nature walk in Kibale Forest

After breakfast you will report at the Kanyanchu Tourist Centre at 08.00 am for a briefing on the rules before tracking the chimpanzees. The trek for the chimps takes 2-3 hours and it will provide you with the opportunity to also see a variety of other primates and animals as well as birds, and various species of butterflies and insects. You will return to the lodge for lunch after which you will go for a nature walk in the unique Bigodi swamp eco-tourism site where you will see uncommon plants, variety of monkey species and rare bird species such as the Great Blue Turacco, little Bulbul, Rwenzori Turaco and the Narina Trogon, among others. Your guide will provide detailed explanations on the forest fauna and flora to ensure that your walk is both informative and enjoyable. You will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Boat cruise on Kazinga channel

After your morning breakfast, you will travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park where you will arrive in the early afternoon hours. You will have lunch and later go for a 2-hour boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel. The 42km channel joins Lake Edward and Lake George. This trip passes through possibly the highest concentration of hippos and offers an excellent opportunity for photography, bird watching and game viewing. The prolific bird life is colorful, with well over 550 resident species. Dinner and overnight will be spent at your reserved lodge.

Day 6: Game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park

You will wake up early and with a packed breakfast and lunch set off for a dawn game drive to catch-up with the early risers and predators returning to their hideouts. You will most likely meet grazing Hippos, Elephants, and Lions, spotted Hyenas, bush buck, water buck, stripped jackal, comical warthogs and the elusive leopard. Proceed to Maramagambo forest where you will visit the bat cave to spot the pythons often observed in the crevices of the cave floor where they prey on the bats. The cave is near a picturesque formerly Blue lake and Hunters cave. You may also see primates and forest birds such as bat hawks, brown eared woodpecker and others. You will return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Queen Elizabeth National Park – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

You will have an early breakfast and drive to Kyambura Gorge for a guided primate walk to see the habituated chimps, rare birds and beautiful scenery. You will after the walk proceed to Ishasha sector in the southern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park through the deep and wide dry craters that are occupied by savanna grasses and acacia. The drive takes you through the unique western rift valley escarpment to the Ishasha sector where you will take on yet another game drive in search for the tree climbing lions before proceeding to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey to Bwindi takes about 4 hours and the route is well endowed with remarkable tourist attractions at which we make stopovers.

These include the savannah plains, the rolling hills and rich cultural backdrop. We shall get to the hotel of your booking in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi

You will have an early breakfast and move to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla tracking rules. You will be allocated a Gorilla family to track and guides to lead you to the Gorillas. The tracking experience will be a 2-5 hour exercise. Upon encountering the gorillas you will spend a maximum of one hour with them taking photos and marveling at these elusive creatures. You will watch in awe as they go about their activities. You will return to the lodge for lunch and later go out for a community walk to explore the life styles of the people living around the park. You will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Travel to Rwanda

We leave early in the morning and head for Parc Nationalede Volcanoes in Rwanda. You will enjoy spectacular scenery of rolling hills, deep valleys and water marshes along this route and have a stopover at Musanze to experience a community walk. You will end up in Ruhengeri town where you will have dinner and overnight at the lodge of your booking.

Day 10: Gorilla trekking in Parc des Volcanoes

You will have an early breakfast and report at the Park Headquarters for a briefing on the rules to be observed during Gorilla trekking. You will be allocated a Gorilla family to track and guides to lead you to the Gorillas. The tracking will take 2-5 hours. Once found, you will spend a maximum of one hour observing the gorillas in their natural setting. After the tracking you will return to the hotel for lunch and spend the rest of the day relaxing at your hotel.

Day 11: Golden Monkey tracking

You will set off after breakfast to track the rare Golden monkeys in ParcNationale Des Volcanoes. The Golden Monkey is listed as “endangered” and the two newly habituated groups of about 40 individuals each are the only ones in Africa. You will also be able to see other primate species such as vervet monkeys, baboons, and a variety of bird species and butterflies. The guide will explain to you how these primates behave and about the about fauna and flora in this park. You will return to your lodge for lunch and have the rest of the day to yourself to relax.

Day 12: Visit to Visoke Volcano and Dian Fossey Memorial

You will after breakfast trek to the awesome Visoke volcano for a scenic view of the beauty of this area and the outlaying twin lakes. You will return to the lodge for lunch and thereafter take a hike to Karisoke Research Centre established by an American primatologist (Dian Fossey) who dedicated all her life conserving the primates. You will after being taken around this remarkable centre drive to Kigali City arriving in the evening. You will have dinner and overnight at the hotel of your booking.

Day 13: Kigali City Excursion and departure

You will have breakfast and go for an excursion in the City of Kigali. You will visit the Genocide memorial site, the colourful markets and the craft centres. You will be returned to your hotel for lunch after which you will be transferred to the Airport for your outbound departure flight.

When to go gorilla tracking - gorilla trekking in Uganda & RwandaBEST TIME TO GO

Gorilla Viewing: Gorilla trekking can take place at any time of year with April/May and November being wetter. However, be aware that rain occurs all year round. For general game viewing safaris, the best time to go is during the dry season (between June and September).
