Itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Lake Mburo National Park and Boat ride

You will set off the start of the 19 Days Uganda Rwanda Great Adventure with Gorillas after breakfast for the Lake Mburo National Park in the western part of the country. You will have a stopover at the Equator for photos at this international landmark where the two hemispheres divide.

You will continue the drive through the rolling hills and plains dotted with community homesteads and herds of the long horned Ankole cattle to Lake Mburo National Park. The park is renowned for zebras, impalas, buffaloes, hippos, topi and elands including the rare shoebill stork, crested crane, pelicans, fish eagle, heron and many other water birds. Day 2: Nature walk and Game drive in the park,  Inquire Now to book this trip

You will after breakfast go for a tour of the park on foot with an experienced game ranger who will explain to you which animals have left behind footprints and droppings and how long ago. Mburo is one of the two parks in Uganda where it is permitted to go for a tour on foot.

After the nature walk, the  22 Days Uganda Rwanda Great Adventure with Gorillas  route will transfer you to Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale.

Day 3: Activities at Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi is said to be one of the most beautiful places in western Uganda.

It is the second deepest lake in Africa [900 meters deep] and also one of the few places in the country where it is considered safe to swim as it is bilharzias free.

The landscape around the lake is made up of terraced hills protruding from the water’s edge. Bunyonyi means “place of little birds” and as the name suggests, there is plenty of birdlife around the lake. You will have a canoe ride on this river and explore 4-7 of the 24 small islands on this lake teaming with many water animals and various bird species.

There is also the option of going for a 2-3 hour walk [14 Kms] along the Lake Bunyonyi shores to enjoy the different viewpoints of this beautiful place.

You will go through the villages of the local people to have an experience of how they go about their daily routine activities and be amazed by the way they skillfully cultivate the hill sides and how they care for their animals (cows) that are a prime source of pride.

You will also hike to the most popular view point on the hills to see the exceedingly beautiful scenery of this part of the country. You will return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation, dinner and overnight

Day 4: Travel to Parc National des Volcanoes

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

You will have an early breakfast and move to the Park headquarters where you will receive a briefing on the rules of gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park and be allocated the gorilla group you will be trekking.

You will after the briefing follow the ranger guides into the forest to search for the gorillas in the Volcano Virunga Hills and the verdant Valley.

Once traced, you will spend a maximum of one hour observing the gorillas in their natural setting. You will return to your lodge for lunch and spend the rest of the day relaxing or sightseeing around your lodge.

Day 6: Travel to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Day six of the Uganda Rwanda Wildlife Safari, have breakfast and set off to visit a local market and the surrounding communities to have an experience of the culture of the people in this area. You will return to the lodge for lunch and later drive to Bwindi in Uganda arriving late in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight will be at the lodge of your booking.

Day 7: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

You will have an early morning breakfast and with a packed lunch move to the Park headquarters to join other trackers in a briefing about the gorilla trekking in Bwindi rules at 7:30am. You will trek through thick creepers and undergrowth with your guides to find the Gorillas, which can take you 1-8 hours.

The steeply forested landscape is incredibly dense but crisscrossed by numerous animal trails allowing access by tourists. You will have one hour to stay with the Gorillas once sited. You will after the Gorilla trekking drive to Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale District arriving in the evening. You will have dinner and overnight at the lodge of your booking.

Day 8: Travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park

You will after breakfast drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park through the beautiful scenery of this part of the country characterized by gigantic hills and steep valleys of volcanic origin. You will get to Queen Elizabeth through the southern part of the park (Ishasha sector) renowned for the tree climbing lions.

Day 9: Game drive and boat cruise

Day nine of the Uganda Rwanda Wildlife Safari, set off for an early morning game drive (about 6.30am) for an awesome experience of spotting the animals in their natural habitats.

The collection will include elephants, solitary cape buffaloes, hyenas, lions, leopards, antelopes, warthogs and beautiful birds of prey such as vultures, ox-peckers, cattle egrets, whydahs, sparrows etc. This park has spectacular sceneries including Crater Lakes and rolling savannah plains overlooking the snowcapped Rwenzoris Mountain ranges.

You will return to your lodge for breakfast and relax till lunch. In the afternoon you will take a relaxing 2 hour boat cruise on Kazinga channel. This is a huge opportunity to spot more animals as they come to cool off down the stream.

This trip passes through possibly the highest concentration of hippos. This launch cruise offers an excellent platform for photography, bird watching and game viewing. The prolific bird life is colorful and stupendous with well over 550 resident species.

Day 10: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park

You will after breakfast head to Kibale Forest National Park arriving in the early afternoon. On the Drive to Kibale National Park you will be able to enjoy an impressive sight of the legendary “Mountains of the Moon” which you will clearly see on the road to Fort Portal.

You will have lunch in Fort Portal after which you will head to the Kibale National Park and visit the unique Bigodi swamp eco-tourism site for a guided walk where you will see rare plants and bird species as well as beautiful butterflies and other insects.

The rare birds will include the Great Blue Turacco, little Bulbul, Rwenzori Turaco and the Narina Trogon, among others. You can alternatively have a tour of the crater region around Ndali lodge to appreciate the awesome scenic beauty of this part of the world.

Day 11: Chimpanzee tracking and Bigodi swamp walk/Scenery viewing

After breakfast you will report at the Kanyanchu Tourist Centre at 08.00 am for a briefing before tracking the chimpanzees. The forest is only accessible on foot and the walk will provide you with the opportunity to also see a variety of other primates and animals as well as birds, and a variety of butterflies, and other insects.

Here you will search for the wild chimpanzee, red-tailed monkey, black-and-white colobus monkey and many others. A guide will provide detailed explanations on the primates and the forest fauna and flora to ensure that your trek is both enjoyable and informative.

In the afternoon, the team gets set to visit the communities’ eco projects adjacent the park such as schools, health clinics, community garden, and crafts shop. In the evening you will return your lodge for dinner, a treat to a cultural dance performance and overnight.

Day 12: Hot springs tour and visit to the Pygmy communities in Semuliki

Day twelve of the Uganda Rwanda Wildlife safari, have an early morning breakfast and head westwards to the Semuliki Wildlife Reserve located in the basin of the Western Rift Valley.

You take a nature walk to the hot springs and later visit the pygmy communities to learn about their lifestyle and activities.
You will return to Fort Portal for dinner and overnight.

Day 13: Travel to Murchison Falls National Park

You will have breakfast and set off for Murchison Falls National Park. The drive is through a verdant rural countryside dotted with traditional homesteads and farmlands.

You will have a lunch break in Hoima town and continue with the journey to Murchison Falls National Park arriving late in the afternoon. Upon arrival you will go straight to visit the magnificent ‘top-of-the-falls’ where you can marvel at the mighty Nile River squeezing itself in a 7 meter gorge before tumbling 40 meters down! From here we will proceed for check-in at the accommodation facility of your choice for dinner and overnight.

Day 14: Game Drive and Boat Cruise

Day fourteen of the Uganda Rwanda Wildlife safari, we start with a game drive on the northern bank of the Nile, with high chances of seeing giraffes, elephants, lions, cape buffalo, hartebeest, waterbuck, oribi, bushbuck, bohor reedbuck, hyena and if you are lucky, the leopard.

After this we return to the hotel/camp for relaxation till lunch. In the afternoon the safari will be continued with a boat cruise on the river Nile for wildlife game viewing at close quarters.

The boat stops at the bottom of the falls just meters away from the Devil’s caldron where one can see the smoky falls at very close range.

You will have the option of taking the challenging walk to the top of the falls, or simply take photos from the comfort of your boat before returning to the lodge for overnight.

Day 15: Travel to Soroti

We depart Murchison fall s after breakfast and head for the eastern part of Uganda. The journey takes 7 hours and we shall spend the night in Soroti Town at Soroti Hotel or Eneku Village Lodge.

Day 16: Travel to Sipi Falls in Mbale

We drive to Sipi Falls with a stopover at Lake Bisina to look for the Shoebill and Fox weaver birds and to visit the local market. We arrive in Sipi in the late afternoon and spend the night at either River Lodge or Crow’s Nest.

Day 17: Exploration of Mt. Elgon

Day seventeen of the Uganda Rwanda Wildlife safari, after breakfast go to the trailhead at Kapkwata where you will be briefed about the activities of the day and to meet your ranger guide. You will hike up the mountain to explore the beautiful mountainous scenery comprising magnificent waterfalls, enormous caves, scenic mountain peaks, gorges and hot springs.

You will finish with a hike to the stunning Sipi falls after which you will depart for Jinja Town. You will have your dinner and overnight at Jinja Nile Resort Hotel or Gately on the Nile

Day 18: White Water Rafting on River Nile in Jinja

You will spend the day engaging in rafting activities. We start with a briefing on the dos and don’ts regarding rafting by staff of Adrift Outfitters. The Nile River has some of the best rapids in the world. No experience is needed. You can choose to do half day or full day. The complete rafting trip covers 25 km of river Nile.

After the rafting adventure you will cool off with group BBQ and a few drinks to celebrate and share the day’s excitements with other participants. You will then return to your Hotel for dinner and overnight at Jinja Nile Resort or Paradise Hotel.

Day 19: Travel to Kampala and City Excursion

Last Day of the Uganda Rwanda Wildlife, we depart Jinja after breakfast and head to Kampala for a city excursion. We start off with a visit to the Martyrs Shrines, at Namugongo. This is a very important site in Africa and worldwide where 22 Martyrs were set ablaze by the Buganda King for refusing to renounce their Christian faith.

We later visit the Uganda National Museum to see ethnological and natural-historical exhibitions that represent the country’s colourful past and crown the day with a visit to an exhibition ground for African crafts where you will buy some souvenirs.

You will then retire for dinner and overnight at the hotel of your booking or be transferred to the airport for your international flight.

When to go gorilla tracking - gorilla trekking in Uganda & RwandaBEST TIME TO GO

Gorilla Viewing: Gorilla trekking can take place at any time of year with April/May and November being wetter. However, be aware that rain occurs all year round. For general game viewing safaris, the best time to go is during the dry season (between June and September).
