The 9 Day Uganda Highlights Safari route includes; Kampala City – Kibale Forest – Queen Elizabeth National Park – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and back to Kampala.

The 9 Day Uganda Highlights Safari route is your choice if you’re interested in visiting the major wildlife highlights of Uganda tourism. The safari takes you adventuring the west of Uganda through to Murchison falls beautiful scenes and the Big 5 game, then down south through the montane rain forests of Kibale to find the habituated chimpanzees and other primates.

The famous Queen Elizabeth National Park is included in the route where you get to drive off the beaten truck into the beautiful savannah plains through to Ishasha to meet the tree lions and take a boat ride on Kazinga channel.

The most exciting highlight of the 9 Day Uganda Highlights Safari will be trekking through the misty thick jungle of Bwindi Impenetrable forest to find the Mountain gorillas. Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Uganda

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport you will be met by our safari guide who will transfer you to Kampala to a hotel booked for you.

In case you have had an early flight to Uganda, you will be taken on a brief tour of the city of Kampala while being briefed on tomorrow start of the 9 Day Uganda Highlights Safari.

Day 2: Travel to Kibale Forest National Park

You depart Kampala after breakfast and head westwards to begin the 9 Day Uganda Highlights Safari towards Fort Portal town.

This drive is the most beautiful drive because you get to view the best countryside green along the way, tea plantation and the backdrop of Rwenzori mountains.

You’ll be sure to take out your cameras occasional. The drive will take about 4 – 5 hours.

You will have lunch in Fort Portal and continue to Kibale where you will go for either a community walk or visit the beautiful Crater lakes region for another spectacular scenic view of the beautiful landscapes.

Dinner and overnight will be at your reserved lodge.

Day 3: Chimp tracking, Bigodi Swamp walk and transfer to Queen Elizabeth

You will have an early morning breakfast and we set off to track the chimps in the Kibale Forest National Park. This forest is reputed for of having the greatest variety and highest concentration of primates in East Africa. Chimpanzee trekking starts at 8.00 am and takes half a day. Other primates you are bound to see swinging on trees in the dense forest include the phoestes, Red-Colobuses, Red-tailed and grey cheeked Mangabeys and others.

You will also see various species of birds, butterflies and many small insects. The Kibale chimpanzee tracking guide will provide detailed explanations on the primates, and all the forest’s fauna and flora to ensure that your walk is informative and enjoyable. You will return to your lodge for lunch after which you will go for Bigodi swamp walk. The wetland is renowned for its rich variety of rare plants and diversity of birdlife including the rare shoebill stock. You will after the walk transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge of booking.

Day 4: Morning game drive and Boat Cruise on Kazinga Channel

You will rise very early (6.30am) and with your packed lunch go for a morning game drive to catch-up with the early risers and predators returning to their hideouts. You will most likely meet grazing Hippos, Elephants, and Lions, spotted Hyenas, bush buck, water buck, stripped jackal, comical warthogs and the elusive leopard.

In the afternoon you will take a launch cruise along the amazing Kazinga channel to see, at close range, the water animals to include Hippos, Buffalos, Crocodiles and elephants bathing on the channel banks. There is also a variety of bird species on the water banks especially the famous Shoebill, pelican and Jacana. Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge.

Day 5: Transfer to Ishasha sector, Game drive  

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Ishasha sector. You will enjoy a game drive in Ishasha sector in search for the tree climbing lions. Expect to see other animal species such as the warthogs, leopard, spotted hyena and birds. You will have your dinner and overnight in Ishasha sector.

Day 6: Morning Game drive and transfer to Bwindi, Batwa Cultural Experience

After breakfast, you will enjoy a game drive in Ishasha sector in search for the tree climbing lions. Expect to see other animal species such as the warthogs, leopard, spotted hyena and birds. After, you will transfer to Bwindi. In the afternoon after lunch, you will go for a guided community walk to experience the livelihoods of the local communities.

As planned, you take on the gorilla trekking Bwindi route to visit a traditional herbalist to see how he prepares native medicine to treat a wide array of human ailments, see a black smith manufacturing local tools used in everyday life and see how local beer is brewed using local methods. You will also be entertained by the traditional dances offered by the community. Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge of booking.

Day 7: Gorilla Trekking

Today enjoy surely. After breakfast, proceed for the morning briefing before enjoying the highlight of the trip- Gorilla trekking, which may last the entire day. We trek through the rainforest and bamboo covered slopes, accompanied by a guide and trackers, in search of a mountain gorilla family.

The walking can sometimes be tough and long, but when you catch a glimpse of the magnificent silverback, any discomforts will be quickly forgotten. When sighted, visitors will be guided to within 6 metres from the gorillas, sit around them for a whole hour while gazing into their big round eyes. Gorilla trekking is unpredictable.

It’s difficult to foresee how many hours you will hike. The gorilla excursion can take from 2 up to 8 hours. Expect to walk along distance in steep and muddy conditions, sometimes with rain overhead, before you encounter any gorillas. A good physical condition is recommended. For conservation purposes, time spent with the gorillas is limited to one hour. A ranger will brief you on how to behave with the gorillas.  Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge of booking.

Day 8: Transfer to Lake Mburo, Afternoon/ Evening game drive

You will have an early breakfast and travel to Lake Mburo National Park centered on a series of swamp-fringed lakes rich in bird life while its green acacia woodland harbors wildlife like the Zebra, warthog, Elands, Impala among others.

Later after lunch you will go for an afternoon/ evening game drive. Expect to see zebra, hippos, crocodiles, eland, antelope, impala, and a variety of birds. And later retire to the lodge of your booking for dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Early Morning Walking Safari and transfer to Kampala/ Entebbe

Early breakfast before embarking on our return to Kampala, You will have a short drive to the Rwonyo park headquarters. This has often been a good chance of seeing hyenas coming back to the water you will see buffalo zebra, impala and topi and with a bit of luck may be even asitatunga, an antelope rarely seen living in the papyrus swamps. Later, in the mid-morning you will transfer back in Kampala reaching in the evening. Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge of booking.

When to go gorilla tracking - gorilla trekking in Uganda & RwandaBEST TIME TO GO

Gorilla Viewing: Gorilla trekking can take place at any time of year with April/May and November being wetter. However, be aware that rain occurs all year round. For general game viewing safaris, the best time to go is during the dry season (between June and September).
