This 9 day safari is an ultimate African Safari through Uganda, Rwanda and Congo offering a lifetime experience to track mountain gorillas in the Virunga region and a visit to the savannah game in Queen Elizabeth National Park. You will have opportunity to relax on the islands of Lake Bunyonyi before crossing to Rwanda for another gorilla trekking experience and to hike the Nyiragongo Volcano.

Itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park (5-7hrs)

You will set off after breakfast and head west of Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The journey will take you 6-7 hours. You will have a stopover at the Equator where you will have an opportunity to stand in 2 hemispheres at the same time and take memorial photos. You will continue to Mbarara town where you will have lunch before proceeding to Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Day 2: Game Drive and Boat cruise on Kazinga channel

You will wake up early for a morning game drive in the park during which you will see Lions, Elephants, Topis, Leopards, Bush bucks, Cape Buffaloes, Defassa Waterbucks, Giant Forest Hogs, Uganda Kobs, among others.

In the afternoon you will go for a two hour boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel which connects Lakes George and Edward and view concentrations of giant hippos, elephants and crocodiles among others. You will also see many varieties of birds at the water shores. You will have dinner and overnight at the lodge booked for you.

Day 3: Game drive and transfer to Bwindi

You will have an early breakfast and set off for a game drive in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. You will later travel to Bwindi with sights of the great country-side, bamboo forest and scenic landscape characteristic of the western rift valley. For lunch you will stop at a local restaurant enroute.

Day 4: Gorilla trek and transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

You will have an early morning breakfast and move to the Park headquarters to join other trackers in a briefing about the gorilla trekking rules at 7:45 am. You will be allocated a Gorilla family to track and guides who will lead you through thick creepers and undergrowth to find the Gorillas. This may taken 1-8 hours depending on where the Gorilla group you are tracking spent the previous night. Upon coming across the Gorillas you will be allowed to spend one hour watching them as they feed, play and care their young ones.You will thereafter return to your lodge for a late lunch. You will then set off for Lake Bunyonyi.

Day 5: Activities at Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi is said to be the second deepest lake in Africa and one of the most beautiful places in western Uganda. It is also one of the few places in the country where it is considered safe to swim as it is bilharzias free. This morning you can choose to either have a canoe-ride on the lake or a walk through the surrounding hills. The landscape around the lake is made up of steep hills covered with lush green vegetation protruding from the water’s edge. Bunyonyi means “place of little birds” and as the name suggests, there is plenty of birdlife around the lake. You can choose to go for a canoe ride to see water animals and birds, go for swimming, or hike to the view point in the hills to admire the volcano mountain ranges at the border with Rwanda.

Day 6: Drive to Rwanda and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

You will have an early breakfast and drive to Kigali in Rwanda via the Katuna border post. You will have lunch in Kigali and thereafter transfer to Volcanoes National Park arriving in the evening. You will have dinner and overnight at the hotel of your booking.

Day 7: Optional activities in Volcanoes National Park

You will after breakfast have the option to either go for Gorilla trekking, Golden monkey tracking or hike to Dian Fossey Memorial site to pay homage to the lady who spent her entire adult life working towards conserving and habituating the Mountain Gorillas in this forest . For Gorilla trekking you will have to report to early in the morning for a briefing on the trekking rules and to be allocated a family of Gorillas to track with the guides. After the trekking you will return to your hotel for lunch and later transfer to Lake Kivu for relaxation on the beaches.

Dinner and overnight will be at the hotel of your booking.

Day 8: Travel to Virunga in Congo

You will have an early breakfast and drive to Goma town in the Democratic Republic of Congo. You will have a tour of this city and have lunch after which you will proceed to Virunga National Park. You will have dinner andovernight at the hotel of your booking.

Day 9: Gorilla trek in Virunga and transfer to Kigali

You will have an early breakfast and set off at 6:30 am for a briefing on the Gorilla tracking rules to be observed after which you will be allocated a Gorilla family to track and the guides to lead you in finding them. The tracking may last for 1-5 hours depending on where the Gorilla group you are tracking spent the night the previous day. Upon sighting the Gorillas you will be allowed to stay with them for one hour. You will after the trek drive to the border and cross back into Rwanda. Depending on your flight schedule you will either be transferred to the airport for your outbound departure fight or for overnight stay in Kigali.

When to go gorilla tracking - gorilla trekking in Uganda & RwandaBEST TIME TO GO

Gorilla Viewing: Gorilla trekking can take place at any time of year with April/May and November being wetter. However, be aware that rain occurs all year round. For general game viewing safaris, the best time to go is during the dry season (between June and September).
