Kwita Izina Ceremony in Rwanda – Gorilla Babies named this 2022

The Kwita Izina Ceremony in Rwanda this year marked the 18th edition, a ceremony that marks the naming of newborn gorilla babies in Volcanoes National Park. A centuries-old Rwandan tradition for giving a name to a newborn baby. Rwanda celebrates new births of the rare mountain gorillas through naming.

This year, Kwita Izina Ceremony in Rwanda was held in Kinigi at the foothills of Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda welcomed international celebrities, various dignitaries from across the globe, conservation partners, researchers, and local communities living around Volcanoes National Park for this amazing ceremony aimed at mountain gorilla conservation in Rwanda.

20 mountain gorilla babies were named and these were from all families living in Volcanoes National Park, the gorilla families include Noheli, Musilikali, Ntambara, Mutobo, Igisha, Susa, Kureba, Pablo, Sabyinyo, Muhoza, Amahoro, and Hirwa families.

It was a beautiful day at Volcanoes National Park where gorilla namers for 2022 gorilla babies gathered to give names to members of each family at the 18th Kwita Inzina ceremony. Key namers for this year’s Kwita Izina ceremony included:-

The Prince of Wales (named virtually)

Charles, Prince of Wales, is the heir apparent to the British throne as the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Louise Mushikiwabo, Secretary-General of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie

She is the fourth and current Secretary General of La Francophonie. She previously served as Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation for nine years from 2009 to 2018.

Didier Drogba, Chelsea Football Club Legend

He is an Ivorian retired professional footballer who played as a striker. He is the all-time top scorer and former captain of the Ivory Coast national team.

Gilberto Silva, Arsenal Football Club Legend

He is a Brazilian former professional footballer who played as a defensive midfielder most notably for the English Premier League club Arsenal, Super League club Panathinaikos F.C., Clube Atlético Mineiro, and the Brazil national team.

Sauti Sol, Musical Band

Sauti Sol is a Kenyan band formed by vocalists Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano, and Savara Mudigi in 2005. Initially, a cappella group, guitarist Polycarp Otieno joined before they named themselves Sauti Sol.

Key gorilla names for the newborn included: Ubwuzuzanye named by The Prince of Wales, Ubusugire named by Sir Ian Clark Wook, Ntare, Ihuriro, Turikumwe, Muganga Mwiza, Ishami, and others.

The Rwanda Development Board authorities thanked the local communities, the rangers, trackers, gorilla doctors, researchers, and transboundary partners who have worked tirelessly to make mountain gorilla conservation a success.
