9-Day Uganda Gorillas, Chimpanzees Trekking & Wildlife Safari via Kigali

9-Day Uganda Gorillas, Chimpanzees Trekking & Wildlife Safari via Kigali

An invitation to East Africa’s living story.

This 9-day journey, authored by All Budget Gorilla Safaris Ltd, unites two nations, three iconic primate experiences, and the very best of Uganda’s wildlife landscapes. Beginning in Kigali and moving westward through the Virunga highlands into Uganda’s dramatic Albertine Rift, you’ll meet mountain gorillas, track chimpanzees, glide along the Kazinga Channel, and search for the elusive shoebill at Mabamba Swamp. Every day on this itinerary has been carefully balanced to combine wilderness immersion, cultural encounters, and comfortable mid-to-upper-midrange lodge stays specifically chosen to complement the rhythm of the trip and to place you close to the action while preserving time to reflect.

This safari is ideal for travelers who want concentrated wildlife highlights with efficient logistics: short, scenic road transfers, convenient lodge placements (Kigali Eagle View Lodge; Arcadia Cottages, Bunyonyi; Neck View Lodge; Enganzi Lodge; Kibale Isunga Lodge; Kigambira Safari Lodge), and expert guiding by rangers and trackers who read the forest as simply as a map. From the start, you’ll feel how conservation and community intersect: your gorilla and chimpanzee permits support park protection and local livelihoods, the boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel demonstrates how waterways sustain both wildlife and people, and village stops reveal traditional knowledge that has shaped these landscapes for generations.

Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park

Expect energetic mornings and restorative afternoons. Early departures maximize wildlife sightings when animals are most active; afternoons may include gentle boat rides, cultural visits, or swamp walks that introduce you to the birdlife and smaller species that make Uganda’s ecosystems so rich. The trip’s tempo respects the unpredictable nature of wildlife: gorilla and chimp trekking durations vary, and the itinerary builds in buffers so you never feel rushed. Accommodation is handpicked to combine comfort and authenticity: intimate lodges sited for views, privacy, and easy park access.

Conservation sits at the heart of the experience. Gorilla and chimpanzee permits are limited and tightly managed to minimize disturbance and maximize safety for primates. When you step into the forest, you follow strict briefings and guidelines delivered by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers; these rules protect both you and the animals. Additionally, your stay supports community projects from Batwa cultural programs to Bigodi Wetland conservation so your presence creates a positive ripple long after you depart.

What awaits: close, contemplative time with mountain gorillas; chimpanzee families moving through canopy corridors; sunrise and sunset reflected on crater-rim lakes and on Lake Bunyonyi’s mirror; a boat trip passing hippos and riverine birds in Queen Elizabeth’s Kazinga Channel; the extraordinary shoebill, a prehistoric silhouette revealed among papyrus reeds; and, as a quiet finish, an Equator stop that folds the journey into a geographic moment of wonder. This itinerary mixes spectacle with intimacy: the Great Apes provide the emotional high points, and the savanna and wetland days deliver varied game, distinctive birds, and landscapes that shift from volcanic peaks to cratered plains.

Day-by-Day Itinerary (detailed program)

Day 1 — Arrival Kigali: city orientation and first night at Kigali Eagle View Lodge (D)

Your safari opens in Kigali, Rwanda’s clean and friendly capital. On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you’ll be met by a All Budget Gorilla Safaris Ltd representative who will manage transfer and check-in to Kigali Eagle View Lodge, a peaceful base with sweeping views of the city. After settling in, enjoy a guided Kigali city tour that introduces the city’s modern rhythms and its layered history. Typical stops include the Kigali Genocide Memorial (a solemn and powerful space for learning and reflection) and local craft markets where artisans produce woven goods, jewelry, and textiles. The tour gives context to the region you’re about to explore: Rwanda’s recent transformation and its conservation initiatives that support the Virunga landscape.

Late afternoon returns you to the lodge for an elegant welcome dinner, a chance to meet your guide and go through final briefings for the days ahead (permits, packing tips, health reminders). Overnight at Kigali Eagle View Lodge with dinner included. This evening sets the tone: respectful, well-organized, and comfortable.

Day 2 — Drive to Lake Bunyonyi: Arcadia Cottages, Bunyonyi (B, L, D)

After breakfast, begin the scenic road transfer from Kigali to southwestern Uganda. The drive crosses patchwork hills and terraced fields and culminates at Lake Bunyonyi often called the “Switzerland of Africa.” You’ll arrive at Arcadia Cottages Bunyonyi, your tranquil waterside retreat. The afternoon is relaxed: a traditional canoe ride explores some of the lake’s many islands (including the haunting “Punishment Island”), and birding along the shoreline reveals the lake’s rich avifauna a fine prelude to the primate days ahead.

Lake Bunyonyi’s calm, bird-rich environment offers restorative time after travel. The lodge provides comfortable rooms, warm meals, and verandas for lake views. Dusk here is gentle, with islands drifting into mist and the hills folding around the water. Dinner and an overnight stay at Arcadia Cottages.

Day 3 — Transfer to Bwindi (Ruhija) & Gorilla Trekking (B, L, D) — Neck View Lodge

Rise early for a scenic road transfer into the Bwindi region, arriving at the park headquarters in time for the gorilla trekking briefing. This day delivers the trip’s emotional core: gorilla trekking in the Ruhija sector. After ranger orientation, you’ll be allocated to a habituated gorilla family and guided into the forest by experienced trackers. Treks vary in length from short, intimate climbs to longer hikes, depending on the family’s location, but the reward is constant: one hour in the presence of wild mountain gorillas.

Expect profound encounters: silverbacks move with composed authority, mothers care for infants, and juveniles tumble with an almost human playfulness. Your ranger will brief you on proximity rules and photography etiquette; quiet observation is the most respectful and rewarding response. After your 1 hour, return to the park headquarters to collect your trekking certificate before transferring to Neck View Lodge for relaxation. In the afternoon, visit the Batwa community to learn about traditional hunter-gatherer lifeways. This reinforces the social dimension of conservation and supports local livelihoods.

Gorilla Trekking Reflection

The moment you first see a mountain gorilla, words retreat. Rugged breathing, careful feedings, a mother’s protective glance, these are the raw impressions that saturate every sense. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is not fast tourism; it is deliberate and reverent. Trackers move through a cathedral of towering trees and tangled vines, interpreting signs, a broken twig, a flattened patch of undergrowth, a faint scent as ways of following a family’s invisible trail. When the silverback appears, the human heart speeds, then steadies in the presence of composed power. The hour allowed with a gorilla family is a concentrated study of primate society: grooming rituals that mirror our domestic gestures, juvenile play that echoes the joy of youth, and the subtle dominance displays that organize group life. Photographs are secondary to the felt experience: breath fogging in cool highland air, the sound of leaves yielding, and the almost electric hush when a gorilla locks eyes with a human and seems, impossibly, to register recognition. Conservation underpins the entire encounter. The permit system, the rangers, and the trackers all operate to protect these animals and their habitat. For many visitors, the trek reframes priorities, the fragility of the world becomes personal, and the importance of responsible tourism gains a moral urgency. Returning to the lodge, you carry not just images but a changed calibration: the slow, non-verbal dialogue between human and gorilla lingers like a new, quiet knowledge. It is the kind of memory that alters how you travel thereafter.

Day 4 — Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park; overnight at Enganzi Lodge (B, L, D)

Leave Bwindi after breakfast and drive north to Queen Elizabeth National Park, a conservation mosaic of crater lakes, open savanna, and the Kazinga Channel. The Ishasha sector, famous for tree-climbing lions, lies to the south of the park and offers a dramatic contrast to Bwindi’s forest.

You will do a game drive in Ishasha, search for elephants, buffalo, leopards, and the rare sight of lions lounging on fig tree branches. Have picnic lunch, then proceed to the North of Queen Elizabeth Park.

Arrive at Enganzi Lodge, check in, and relax. The rim of the Rwenzori Mountains can often be seen on clear days, and the park’s patchwork of habitats supports high biodiversity.

Day 5 — Morning jeep safari (Kasenyi), afternoon Kazinga Channel boat cruise; Enganzi Lodge (B, L, D)

Begin at dawn with a Kasenyi plains game drive where big herds congregate. Expect close encounters with elephant family groups, Lions, leopards, antelopes, warthogs bowing across the savannah, buffalo, and numerous bird species. After lunch, take the quintessential Queen Elizabeth experience: an afternoon boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel. The slow, shaded ride passes hippo pods, crocodiles, waterbuck at the shoreline, and thousands of water birds. The Kazinga Channel is a highlight for photographers and birdwatchers; the light at golden hour turns the water into a living painting. Return to Enganzi Lodge for dinner and an evening at leisure.

Day 6 — Transfer to Kibale; short morning game drive en route; overnight Kibale Isunga Lodge (B, L, D)

You will wake up early for another Game drive, return to the lodge for Breakfast, and depart Queen Elizabeth heading east toward Kibale National Park. The route crosses the crater lakes region and expansive plantations, landscapes of rolling green and banana terraces. On arrival at Kibale Isunga Lodge, settle in and enjoy an optional short nature walk or an early evening briefing about the next day’s chimpanzee trek. Kibale’s forest is home to dense primate populations; your ranger will prepare you for the morning’s tracking.

Day 7 — Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale + Bigodi Swamp Walk (B, L, D) — Kibale Isunga Lodge

Early morning begins at the park headquarters for a briefing and chimpanzee tracking into Kibale’s verdant forest. Unlike gorilla treks, chimp tracking often takes place in dense canopy corridors where chimps move quickly, watch for calls, broken branches, and the flashes of dark fur. When you find a troop, rangers will allow up to one hour of observation. Kibale’s chimp encounters are dynamic: tool use, grooming, and social interactions provide a fascinating glimpse into primate culture. In the afternoon, visit the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a community-run swamp walk. Bigodi offers excellent birdwatching (look for turacos, kingfishers, and more) and supports local conservation initiatives. Return to Kibale Isunga Lodge for dinner and rest.

 Chimpanzee Tracking & Wetland Ecology

Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale is an exercise in anticipation and patience. The morning unfolds as a collective act of listening: guides interpret distant drumming, a repeated call, and the rustle that suggests movement. The forest yields its secrets slowly: an overturned rotting log, the sunbeams fracturing through leaves, a distant shriek that ratchets the pulse of the group. Meeting a troop is theatrical and intense; chimpanzees are noisy, social, and rapidly expressive. They use branches as tools, slap the ground in excitement, and engage in grooming that strengthens social bonds. The contrast with the Bigodi Wetland walk is instructive: where the forest is a vertical world of canopy and primates, the swamp is a horizontal theatre of water, papyrus, and reeds, a haven for birds and amphibians. Bigodi’s boardwalks thread quietly through this world, exposing silhouettes of kingfishers and the flash of a turaco. The swamp is also a community success story: local guides share how conservation income sustains teachers, clinics, and alternatives to forest clearance. The wetland encapsulates a conservation truth: biodiverse places are sustained not only by laws and rangers, but by the livelihoods that connect people to ecosystems. Walking both forest and swamp in a single day thus becomes a lesson in ecological interdependence: chimps in the canopy, fish and frogs in the swamp, and humans negotiating the space between.

Day 8 — Transfer to Lake Mburo via Kamwenge–Ibanda road; afternoon game drive; Kigambira Safari Lodge (B, L, D)

After breakfast, depart Kibale for Lake Mburo National Park, following a scenic route through rural towns and farmland. On arrival at Kigambira Safari Lodge, enjoy lunch and then set out for an afternoon game drive. Lake Mburo’s rolling acacia and miombo woodlands support a different suite of animals: impala, eland, Burchell’s zebra, hippo, and giraffe. Notably, Lake Mburo is one of the best places in Uganda for horseback safaris (optional) and for close, relaxed wildlife viewing. Sunset over the lake is a photographer’s delight. Return to Kigambira Safari Lodge for dinner.

Day 9 — Early morning walking safari, Equator stop, Mabamba shoebill tour, then transfer to Entebbe for evening flight (B, L)

Wake early for a guided walking safari in Lake Mburo — intimate wildlife encounters on foot, guided by experienced rangers who point out tracks, dung, and the small life that often goes unnoticed from a vehicle. After breakfast, depart toward Entebbe with an Equator photo stop at Kayabwe. Continue to Mabamba Swamp, where a boat excursion explores papyrus channels in search of the remarkable shoebill stork prehistoric, slow-moving bird that rewards patience and quiet observation. After the shoebill tour, continue to Entebbe and transfer to the airport for your evening flight. End of services.

Practical notes, tips and conservation etiquette

  • Fitness and clothing: Gorilla and chimp trekking require sturdy boots, long sleeves, and a lightweight rain jacket. Layers are best: mornings can be cool, afternoons warm.
  • Photography: Use a zoom lens for both gorillas and chimps; flash is discouraged. Respect the ranger’s instructions about distance and noise.
  • Health: Carry hand sanitizer and stay up to date on routine vaccinations. Consult health providers about yellow fever, and malaria prophylaxis
  • Respect local communities: Visits to Batwa villages and local markets are moments to learn; consider small, meaningful purchases rather than handouts.
  • Conservation etiquette: Follow ranger guidance don’t smoke, don’t feed wildlife, and maintain silence during treks.
