7 Days Rwanda & Uganda Primate Safari | Gorilla, Chimp & Wildlife Tour
Safari Overview.
This 7 Days Rwanda & Uganda Primate and Wildlife Safari is an exceptional cross-border journey that combines two gorilla trekking destinations, rare golden monkey encounters, chimpanzee trekking, classic savannah wildlife experiences, and rich cultural interactions across Rwanda and Uganda.
Designed and operated by All Budget Gorilla Safaris Ltd, this itinerary is ideal for travelers seeking an immersive East African experience that goes beyond gorillas connecting rainforests, volcanoes, savannahs, wetlands, and local communities in one seamless adventure.
Beginning in Kigali, Rwanda, and ending in Entebbe, Uganda, this safari showcases the very best of the region’s biodiversity: mountain gorillas in both Volcanoes and Bwindi, golden monkeys in the bamboo forests of the Virungas, chimpanzees in Kibale Forest, elephants and hippos along the Kazinga Channel, and the endangered white rhinos at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Genocide Memorial, City Tour & Transfer to Volcanoes / Mgahinga
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional guide from All Budget Gorilla Safaris Ltd. After a short briefing, begin your journey with a guided visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, an important and moving site that provides historical insight into Rwanda’s past and its remarkable recovery.
Continue with a Kigali city tour, exploring key landmarks such as local markets, craft centers, and scenic viewpoints that highlight Rwanda’s transformation into one of Africa’s cleanest and safest cities.
After lunch, depart Kigali and drive north toward Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) or cross into Uganda to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, depending on logistics and permit availability. The drive offers breathtaking views of rolling hills, volcanic peaks, and rural landscapes.
Arrive at your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight, surrounded by the dramatic scenery of the Virunga Mountains.
Overnight: Near Volcanoes National Park or Mgahinga
Meal Plan: Lunch & Dinner
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park or Mgahinga & Cultural Village Visit
Today marks one of the most unforgettable experiences of your safari—mountain gorilla trekking.
After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for a detailed briefing by expert rangers. Depending on permit allocation, you will trek gorillas either in Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda). Mgahinga offers a quieter, more intimate trekking experience, often preferred by travelers seeking fewer crowds and stunning volcanic backdrops.
The trek can take 1 to 5 hours, traversing bamboo forests and montane vegetation. Once the gorilla family is located, you will spend one magical hour observing them at close range watching juveniles play, mothers nurture their young, and silverbacks command their families.
In the afternoon, enjoy a cultural village visit, such as the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village (Rwanda) or a Batwa-led experience near Mgahinga, offering insight into traditional lifestyles, music, dance, and conservation stories.
Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking & Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
After breakfast, head out for golden monkey trekking in the bamboo forests near Volcanoes National Park. Golden monkeys are lively, endangered primates known for their striking coloration and energetic behavior, making this trek both exciting and highly photogenic.
The trek is generally shorter and less strenuous than gorilla trekking, making it an excellent complement to the previous day’s experience.
After lunch, depart Rwanda and drive toward Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in southwestern Uganda. This scenic cross-border journey passes through rolling hills, tea plantations, and rural communities.
Arrive at your lodge near Bwindi in the evening, nestled within ancient rainforest habitat.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 4: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – Gorilla Trekking & Batwa Cultural Visit
Today offers your second gorilla trekking experience, this time in the legendary Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.
After an early breakfast, attend a ranger briefing before trekking deep into the forest. Bwindi’s terrain is more rugged and dense, offering a completely different gorilla trekking experience compared to Volcanoes or Mgahinga.
Spend one unforgettable hour with your assigned gorilla family before returning to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, enjoy a guided Batwa community visit, where you will learn about the forest-dependent culture of the Batwa people, their traditional hunting techniques, medicinal knowledge, and music.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 5: Bwindi – Queen Elizabeth National Park (Kazinga Channel) & Equator Stop
After breakfast, depart Bwindi and journey north toward Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s most diverse savannah reserve. En route, stop at the Equator line for photos, experiments, and souvenirs.
Arrive in Queen Elizabeth National Park in time for a highlight activity the Kazinga Channel boat cruise. This natural waterway connects Lake Edward and Lake George and hosts one of the highest concentrations of hippos in Africa, along with elephants, buffalo, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife.
Check in at your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 6: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest & Transfer to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
After breakfast, drive to Kibale Forest National Park, renowned as the best destination for chimpanzee trekking in Africa.
After a ranger briefing, trek through the forest in search of habituated chimpanzee communities. Observing chimpanzees in the wild communicating, feeding, and swinging through the canopy is a thrilling and educational experience.
After lunch, continue north toward Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Uganda where you can track wild rhinos on foot.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 7: Ziwa Rhino Trekking & Transfer to Entebbe
On your final day, enjoy an early morning rhino tracking experience at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Accompanied by expert rangers, you will track endangered white rhinos on foot, learning about conservation efforts to reintroduce rhinos into Uganda’s national parks.
After the trek, drive to Entebbe International Airport, marking the end of your 7 Days Rwanda & Uganda Primate and Wildlife Safari with All Budget Gorilla Safaris Ltd.
