Volcanoes National Park Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park, situated in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda, is renowned as a sanctuary for the critically endangered mountain gorillas. Trekking through the mist-shrouded slopes of these volcanic peaks offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness these gentle giants in their natural habitat. The park is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, providing visitors with an intimate encounter with these fascinating creatures as they go about their daily routines. Beyond gorilla trekking, the park’s diverse ecosystems support a variety of other wildlife, including golden monkeys, forest elephants, and numerous bird species, adding to the allure of this biodiverse haven.

In addition to gorilla trekking, Volcanoes National Park offers a range of activities for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. Guided hikes through the lush bamboo forests provide opportunities to encounter the playful golden monkeys, endemic to the region and captivating in their own right. Cultural experiences with nearby communities offer insight into the traditions and customs of the Rwandan people, enriching visitors’ understanding of the local culture. The best time to visit Volcanoes National Park is during the dry seasons from June to August and December to February when trekking conditions are optimal, although gorilla sightings are possible year-round. It’s advisable to secure permits well in advance to ensure availability and to make the most of this extraordinary wildlife encounter.
